ANIMATION SUPERSTAR CHRIS BAILEY
Chris Bailey’s most recent project was as Director of DESPICABLE ME: MINION MAYHEM, a 3D ride film for Illumination Entertainment and Universal Orlando Resort based on the 2010 animated hit film DESPICABLE ME. This comes on the heels as Director of the Hop DVD short, PHIL’S DANCE PARTY and supervising the animation for Illumination’s film, HOP.
Chris was one of the first 2D traditional character animators to move into CG supervising and directing animated characters in live action/animated, i.e. hybrid films. Chris has extensive experience prepping, storyboarding, pre-vizzing and shooting hybrid films. His successful work with Fox includes X-Men 2, ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS 1 & 2, GARFIELD 1 & 2 and ERAGON. Before that, Chris supervised the CG character animation in Disney’s, HOCUS POCUS, DEEP RISING, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG and Disney’s INSPECTOR GADGET.
Between ALVIN and ALVIN 2, Chris directed the PEPFAR shorts for Warner Bros. and the Kenyan government.
Chris’ animation directing debut was Disney’s RUNAWAY BRAIN, a short film featuring Mickey Mouse, which won him an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short Film. Prior to that, Chris animated on several Disney features from THE LITTLE MERMAID to THE LION KING.
Chris also directed several Disney theme park films including IT’S TOUGH TO BE A BUG, a 3D film for their Animal Kingdom and California Adventure.
Chris ventured into Disney TV as the Supervising Director of Kevin Smith’s animated series, CLERKS. He then directed and executive produced the pilot and first season of Disney’s highly successful series, KIM POSSIBLE.
Chris’ broad experience with Disney (theme parks, films and TV animation), led them to hire him to consult in China. He interfaced and educated artists and executives at the Chinese studio partnered with Disney.
While working as the Director on KIM POSSIBLE, Chris traveled to Korea to teach the artistic style to the artists and directors working at the studio producing the show.
Chris’ CG work on his personal projects, commercials and rock videos has led to speaking engagements at Siggraph and other professional conferences.
Chris enjoys sharing his knowledge and experiences to colleges and High Schools in Southern California and was recently a guest lecturer at VANCOUVER FILM SCHOOL in Canada. He has been a frequent guest at California Lutheran University and his alma mater Cal Arts, in their Character Animation Program.
Chris continues to develop his own projects. He is the creator of MAJOR DAMAGE, a comic book and short film about a little boy who is transformed into his favorite comics book character, MAJOR DAMAGE. Since its creation, the property has spawned a 3D short written & directed by Chris, merchandise and has been published by Image and Sky Dog comics. He is currently working on a series of independent shorts for the web featuring his characters MAJOR DAMAGE, MAJOR STRYKE and KIKI KICKAZUKA.
